📖 User Guide

Welcome to KK7MA Meshtastic Network!

This dashboard shows real-time data from the KK7MA.COM Meshtastic Node in La Grande, Oregon. The network runs on a Heltec Wireless Tracker at 2780 feet elevation.

🚀 Quick Start

Join the network by configuring your Meshtastic device to the same region and frequency. Once connected, you'll appear in the "Online Nodes" view automatically.

How to Send Bot Commands

Send a direct message to MASV with any command (like !help or !w). The bot will respond within seconds.

🔓 Encrypted DM Note: If you message the bot from an encrypted thread, it will respond in a new unencrypted DM thread. Use regular messages to keep conversations in one place.

📊 Dashboard Features

Statistics

Track message activity across the network. The dashboard shows messages received today and total messages processed.

Online Nodes

View all active nodes with their signal strength:

  • 🟢 Green: Excellent signal (better than -80 dBm)
  • 🟡 Yellow: Good signal (-80 to -100 dBm)
  • 🟠 Orange: Fair signal (-100 to -120 dBm)
  • 🔴 Red: Poor signal (worse than -120 dBm)

📍 Interactive Map

Click on any node with a location icon (📍) to view its position on an interactive map. The map shows all nodes with GPS data and their signal information.

💡 Map Tip: Use the 🔄 Refresh Map button to update node positions and signal data without closing the map.

🔒 Privacy & Data Storage

What KK7MA.COM Stores

This public dashboard stores statistics only:

  • Message counts (daily and total)
  • Node IDs, names, and signal strength
  • GPS positions (if broadcast by nodes)
  • Last seen timestamps

What We DON'T Store

No message content is ever logged. Your conversations are private. Only metadata (timestamp, sender/receiver IDs) is used for routing offline messages.

⚠️ Local Server: The bot runs on home.kk7ma.com (local network). It stores offline messages temporarily until delivery. Once delivered, message text is deleted.

📶 Network Coverage

Base Station

Location: La Grande, Oregon (45.33°N, 118.09°W)
Elevation: 2780 feet
Hardware: Heltec Wireless Tracker

Expected Range

  • Urban/Town: 1-3 miles typical range
  • Open Areas: 6-12 miles with clear line-of-sight
  • Hilltop to Hilltop: 30+ miles possible in ideal conditions
📡 Range Tip: Elevation and line-of-sight dramatically improve range. Try positioning your device near windows or higher floors for better connectivity.

❓ Getting Help

Questions about the network? Reach out to licensed Ham radio operators with FCC callsigns in the area. You can also send !help to the MASV bot for a command list.

Bot Not Responding?

  • Check if MASV appears in the "Online Nodes" list
  • Verify your device is configured for the correct region
  • Make sure you're sending a direct message (not channel broadcast)
  • Try !ping to test basic connectivity

🤖 Bot Commands

🔓 Important: Direct Messages & Encryption

If you send commands from an encrypted thread, the bot will respond in a new unencrypted DM thread. This is a limitation of the Python API. Messages in the new thread are not encrypted.

Best Practice: Use regular (non-encrypted) messages for bot commands.

Basic Commands

!ping or !p
Test if the bot is online and responding.
!ping
!time
Get the current server time.
!time
!uptime or !u
See how long the server has been running.
!uptime
!help or !?
Display a quick list of available commands.
!help

Weather Commands

📍 Location: All weather forecasts are for La Grande, Oregon
!w
Get current weather conditions.
!w
!w1
Get today's detailed forecast.
!w1
!w2
Get tomorrow's forecast.
!w2

Messaging Commands

DM ONLY
!m send [nodeID] [message]
Send an offline message to a node. The bot stores it and delivers when that node comes online.
!m send !a1b2c3d4 Hey, are you available later?
💡 Offline Messages: Perfect for leaving messages when someone is out of range. The bot will deliver it as soon as they reconnect.

Advanced Features

Stacked Commands

Send multiple commands at once by separating them with commas:

!ping, !time, !w

The bot will respond to each command in order.

Broadcast Override

By default, DM-only commands (like !m send) won't work in channel broadcasts. Prefix with !! to force the command to run:

!!m send !a1b2c3d4 Test message
⚠️ Privacy Warning: Using broadcast override exposes your command to everyone in the channel. Only use this if you intend to share the information publicly.

Note: The bot will not respond to broadcast commands sent on Channel 0 (the unencrypted primary channel). This prevents spam and unwanted public responses.

Tips & Tricks

  • Command Shortcuts: Most commands have short versions (!p for !ping, !u for !uptime)
  • Case Insensitive: Commands work in any case: !PING, !Ping, !ping all work
  • Spam Prevention: After 4+ pings in an hour, the bot adds a sarcastic response 😄
  • Rate Limits: The bot has built-in rate limiting to prevent abuse. Normal usage won't hit these limits.
